New Literacy Investments in DC

Dear Neighbor,

In this chapter of DC’s historically challenging fiscal climate, we have highlighted early literacy as a key plot point. We can’t skim over this privilege – it might be our only edition, so let’s work collaboratively and let’s do it right.

Kindergarten Literacy Event Mixer

Two weeks ago, I partnered with my colleagues on the State Board of Education, The Washington Teacher’s Union, DC Public Schools, and DC Charter Alliance to convene the first-ever back-to-school literacy mixer. This event brought together literacy coaches, education professionals, and teachers, to discuss new literacy investments.

I see this school year as a novel opportunity to turn a new page in advancing literacy for DC students. The Early Education Literacy Task Force I partnered with Councilmember Pinto to create brought every education agency together to collaboratively put forward recommendations for evidence-based investments. The DCSBOE, OSSE, DME, DCPS, the WTU, and the PCSB – we’re all on the same page. Together, we have the ingredients to create real change.

 Street Clean-up

I'm coordinating a trash pick-up in ANC2G with ANC2G06 Commissioner Rachelle Nigro. We will be starting at the intersection of 4th Street NW & M Street NW from 10 a.m. to noon. Supplies will be provided by DCDPW's Helping Hands Initiative. Please join us and/or help share with Ward 2 Neighbors!

Upcoming SBOE Public Meeting

Please join me at tonight’s DCSBOE public meeting at 5:30 p.m. on September 18th at 441 4th St. NW. Our next meeting will be October 15th at 5:30 pm. Register to testify here.

All the best,

Allister
